Christmas balloon garland ideas

The short version: a Christmas balloon garland is one of the quickest ways to make a room feel festive. Pick two or three Christmas colours, add one metallic for sparkle and a single statement piece like a giant bow or star, then hang it over a mantel, a doorway or the wall behind your Christmas table.

Below are ten looks that work in real homes, the colour combinations behind them, and how much garland you need for each spot.

10 Christmas balloon garland ideas

1. Classic red, green and gold

The traditional palette never fails. Use deep red as the main colour, forest or light green as the second, and chrome or matte gold for highlights. It suits a mantel, a hallway or a dining room wall, and it looks great next to a real tree.

2. The giant bow garland

A big red foil bow in the middle of a red, white and gold garland reads instantly as "Christmas present". It's a simple trick that turns a plain garland into a photo spot, and it works on a front door, a staircase or behind the gift table.

3. Candy cane red and white

Red and white with a touch of silver feels playful and bright, especially for families with young children. Mix glossy white with matte red so the garland has depth instead of looking flat.

4. Winter white and silver

All white, clear and silver balloons give a snowy, elegant look that fits modern living rooms. Add a few chrome silver balloons and a string of warm fairy lights (kept away from the balloons' surface) for glow.

5. Green and gold "Christmas tree" garland

Several shades of green with gold and a few star foils make a garland that looks like a tree laid along the wall. It's a great alternative where there's no space for a real tree.

6. Neutral cream and gold

Not everyone wants bright red. Cream, sand, white and gold feel warm and festive but sit quietly with neutral décor, and they carry straight through to a New Year's Eve party.

7. Christmas morning photo backdrop

Hang a 10 ft garland on the wall behind where gifts are opened. Everyone ends up in the photos on Christmas morning, so give them a backdrop worth keeping.

8. Staircase garland

Run the garland along the banister, starting at the bottom post. Smaller clusters work better here so people can still hold the rail. See our guide to hanging a garland on a mantel or staircase.

9. Christmas dinner table backdrop

A 5 ft garland on the wall behind the table, sweeping from one corner to the opposite side, frames the meal without getting in the way of food or candles. Keep balloons well clear of open flames.

10. From Christmas to New Year's Eve

Planning both parties? Choose black, gold and white with a couple of red accents. Swap the red foils for gold stars or a giant "2027" on 31 December and you have a second look without starting again.

Tip: stick to three colours plus one metallic. More than that starts to look busy rather than festive.

How much garland do you need?

  • Mantel: measure the mantel width and add 1 to 2 feet so the ends can drape down. Most mantels need 5 to 8 feet.
  • Front door or doorway: 8 to 10 feet if it runs across the top and down one side; around 17 feet to go fully up and over a standard door.
  • Wall behind a table: a 10 ft garland frames a standard 6 ft table.
  • Staircase: measure the banister length; 10 to 15 feet covers most flights.

For a full, organic look plan on about 11 balloons per foot of garland. Our balloon count chart has the details.

Keeping it looking fresh through the holidays

  • Fill latex balloons to about 90% so they stay round and pop less.
  • Keep the garland away from fireplaces, radiators, heaters and direct sun. Heat makes latex fade and pop quickly.
  • Indoors and air-filled, a garland usually looks good for several days. For Christmas Day, set it up a day or two before.
  • Foil bows, stars and numbers are reusable: let the air out through the valve and keep them flat for next year.

When to order for Christmas

Our kits are dispatched in 1 to 3 business days and most arrive within 10 to 20 business days with tracking. For Christmas we recommend ordering by 20 November. Every kit comes with the balloons counted for your size, the garland strip, glue dots and wall hooks, and shipping is free.

Safety: balloons are not toys. Keep uninflated or broken balloons away from children under 8 and pets, and never place balloons near candles, fireplaces or heaters.
