How many balloons for a balloon arch

The short answer: plan on about 11 balloons per foot for a full, organic balloon garland or arch made with mixed sizes. That means roughly 55 balloons for 5 feet, 110 for 10 feet and 165 for 15 feet.

That's the ratio we use in every ColorPlusAir kit, and it gives a garland thick enough that you can't see the strip behind it. Below is the full chart, the size mix that works, and how to measure your space.

Balloon arch chart by length

Garland lengthTotal balloons10″12″18″
5 ft (1.5 m)5536145
10 ft (3 m)110722810
15 ft (4.5 m)1651084215
20 ft (6 m)2201445620

Add 5 to 10% extra for pops and gap-filling. If you're adding foil numbers, bows or large shapes, you can use slightly fewer latex balloons, because the foils take up space.

Why the size mix matters more than the total

Professional-looking arches use a mix of sizes. Roughly:

  • About two thirds small (10″). These build the body and fill the gaps.
  • About a quarter medium (12″). These add depth and volume.
  • About one in ten large (18″). These are the eye-catchers that make the garland look "organic" rather than uniform.

Using only one size needs more balloons to look full, and still reads as a tube rather than a cloud.

How to measure your space

Measure the path the garland will follow, not just the width of the wall.

  • Across a wall or table backdrop: measure the sweep you want. A diagonal from low left to high right across a 6 foot table is usually 7 to 8 feet.
  • Over a doorway: add the height of both sides to the width. A standard door (about 7 ft tall and 3 ft wide) needs around 17 feet to go fully up and over, or 8 to 10 feet if it only runs across the top and down one side.
  • Round frame or hoop: multiply the diameter by about 3. A 5 foot hoop is roughly 15 feet around, but most designs only cover half or two thirds of it.

Tip: lay a piece of string or ribbon along the path, then measure the string. It's the quickest way to get it right.

How much helium or air?

Organic garlands are almost always air-filled. They hang on a wall, so they don't need to float, and they last much longer than helium latex (several days indoors, compared with about half a day before helium balloons start to droop). All you need is a hand or electric pump.

Skip the maths

Every ColorPlusAir kit comes in 5, 10 or 15 foot sizes with the right number of each balloon size already counted and colour-matched, plus the strip, glue dots, hooks and a setup card. Choose your theme and length and the numbers are done for you.

Not sure which length? Go one size up. A slightly bigger garland can always be shaped into a fuller curve.
